Part Time Studios & McJAWN Presents: Small Jawns

I'm very happy to be in this show with a great group of local Philly Artists.

In celebration of Part Time Studios’ one year anniversary, they’re having a small-works group art show of local Philly artists. Part Time Studios is located at 2031 Frankford Ave in Fishtown. The exhibit runs from December 3rd to January 2nd. The opening reception is on First Friday, December 3rd at 6PM. Part Time Studios is open 11AM to 3PM from Tuesday to Saturday.

McJAWN and Hipster City Cycle are helping Part Time Studios celebrate its one year anniversary with Small Jawns, a First Friday small-works group art show of local Philly artists. All art is priced under $150, just in time for holidays. Since its opening, Part Time Studios has made an impact in the local creative community by inspiring and supporting a generation of new artists. As a young art collective, Part Time Studios houses prominent artists such as Kyle Fisher, Seth Shimkonis, Adam Smith, Steven Speir, Megan Swansen, Hilary White, Amanda Rombach, and Alex Winthrop.

Small Jawns promises to be an evening of fun, conversation and interactivity. Hipster City Cycle announced that guest attending the event will be the first to try the iPhone App game before it hits the App store in early 2011; additionally, those who choose to have their photo taken as an 8-bit character may also be entered into the Pixelation contest for a chance to be an actual character in the game. McJAWN, a Philly art & culture magazine, will have art zines available on site for those to enjoy. And Vitamin Water will have a free hydration bar, paired along with snacks from Tony Luke’s and Pirate’s Booty.

Some of the artists participating in the show are: Ally Crow, Kyle Fisher, JP Flexner, Bradford Haubrich, Shawn Hileman, Jeremy Hush, Kristen Jasionowski, Joseph Kolasinski, Annette Laszczkowska, Dietrich Meyer, Paul Romano, Seth Shimkonis, Hedy Sirico, Adam Smith, Steven Speir, Steven Streisguth, Lydia Trott, Linnea Vegh, Jake Watling, Hilary White, Bradford Woodworking

Only The Beginning...

As many of you know, I have resigned as Director and I am no longer a partner of Vincent Michael Gallery. I want to thank all of the Artists I had the pleasure of working with while at VMG. I thoroughly enjoyed working with each and every one of you and I look forward to working with many of you in the future. You are the reason I opened a gallery.

I have been presented with countless opportunities over the past few weeks and plan to continue working with galleries and creative organizations as an independent curator and consultant. Over the next few months, I will be exhibiting my own work in New York City, Boston & Philadelphia and will be using my studio time to prepare for these shows. I will also be teaching a collagraph printmaking work shop early next year. Stay tuned to my blog and website for updates...This is only the beginning. Thank you!

Chris Clark's talent as an artist can be traced back to his childhood, when he was introduced to graphic arts by his grandfather, a sign painter. A graduate of Kutztown University with a B.F.A. in printmaking, Chris's work reflects these early lessons in design and as well as his lifelong interest in commercial and residential construction. Featuring organic forms juxtaposed against the engineered and the synthetic, Chris's work explores the relationship between the natural world and technology. His art suggests a certain tension between the two elements, creating an energy that is both kinetic and foreboding.

To create the layered effect prevalent among his pieces, Chris utilizes a combination of different mediums, including screen-print, collage, and spray paint. Occasionally, another element is introduced, such as sewing thread. After tearing up magazines articles and newspapers, Chris will layer the textual pieces among similarly-treated photocopies of blueprints and diagrams. Layer upon layer of paper, paint, and glue are painstakingly positioned upon a wood panel before the final, finishing image is added.

While Chris's past gallery exhibitions are too numerous to list, his work is currently being showcased at the Salt Art Gallery at 212 Race Street. The group show, entitled, “Grew Up & Blew Up: Character Rehab”, will be at the gallery through October 23, 2010. You can also catch up with Chris on his website and via his blog, Twitter and Facebook!

“Urbanites” November 18 – December 16

Historically, artists have often found the “city” as a muse. The energy, technology, population, monumental structures, and pace of life can easily be inspiring. The translation and resulting representation of urban influence may vary from dark and dismal to magnificent, palatial, or even serene. It is this individual absorption of the metropolitan experience that formulates one’s own take on citylife, and the artwork that may stem from it.

Corresponding with this theme, The Distillery Gallery presents “Urbanites”, a show of works which exhibit reflections of experiences within cities. 2D and 3D works will form a survey of responses to urban stimuli, while the gallery itself – located within a mid-19th century rum distillery – will also serve as a character in the exhibit, still donning many traits indicative of its former industrial use. “Urbanites” will feature works by myself. Kenji Nakayama, Josh Falk, Adam O’Day, and more TBA…

Does stardom have an inevitable shelf life? As today’s technology and hyper-interconnectedness allow everyday people to become stars, Hollywood types and formerly untouchable CEOs are being uncloaked to reveal the everyday person within, complete with imperfections, shortcomings, and vices. With the playing field leveled to a certain degree by a media obsessed with celebrity faults and disaster, one has to consider the mortality of a career in or near the limelight.

With this in mind, Salt Gallery director Michael Veneziale has teamed-up with artist/curators Thomas Buildmore and Scott Chasse to present a body of work themed on the dark side of pop culture. In addition to Buildmore and Chasse, artists Chris Clark, Dan King and Morgan Thomas (all from Philly) along with Boston’s Kenji Nakayama will present works which reflect the over-saturation of the celebrity image, downfall of American icons, and public lynchings by the main stream media. Although the theme may sound grim, much of the artwork by these six artists visually contradicts the darkness with bold imagery, color, and/or humor. Including references to Tiger Woods, Henry Winkler, and Big Oil, the show contemplates whether or not the term “celebrity” itself, has indeed, jumped the shark.

Please join us for the opening reception on September 3rd from 6-9:30pm as part of Philly First Fridays.
Free and open to the public.
