Phillyist

Chris Clark's talent as an artist can be traced back to his childhood, when he was introduced to graphic arts by his grandfather, a sign painter. A graduate of Kutztown University with a B.F.A. in printmaking, Chris's work reflects these early lessons in design and as well as his lifelong interest in commercial and residential construction. Featuring organic forms juxtaposed against the engineered and the synthetic, Chris's work explores the relationship between the natural world and technology. His art suggests a certain tension between the two elements, creating an energy that is both kinetic and foreboding.

To create the layered effect prevalent among his pieces, Chris utilizes a combination of different mediums, including screen-print, collage, and spray paint. Occasionally, another element is introduced, such as sewing thread. After tearing up magazines articles and newspapers, Chris will layer the textual pieces among similarly-treated photocopies of blueprints and diagrams. Layer upon layer of paper, paint, and glue are painstakingly positioned upon a wood panel before the final, finishing image is added.

While Chris's past gallery exhibitions are too numerous to list, his work is currently being showcased at the Salt Art Gallery at 212 Race Street. The group show, entitled, “Grew Up & Blew Up: Character Rehab”, will be at the gallery through October 23, 2010. You can also catch up with Chris on his website and via his blog, Twitter and Facebook!
